Abstract
Over the past decade, the number of articles on the detection and analysis of pharmaceuticals in water has increased significantly due to improved methods and new, more accurate measurement tools. Antibiotics, painkillers, heart drugs, oral contraceptives and antidepressants are just some of the pharmaceuticals which concentrations is slowly increasing to disturbing level in river systems and underground water. Ecotoxicity data, as well as information on current pollutant dispersion levels, remain scarce and focus on prescription and widely used over-the-counter medicines. Even these chemical pollutants negatively affect living organisms, ecosystems and public health The purpose of this article is to identify pharmaceutical contamination at the treatment facilities of the city of Telavi (Georgia). At the outlet of this facility, wastewater samples were taken for the presence of 13 pharmaceuticals and the sampling taken was analyzed on a UV-8200 spectrophotometer in the Water Resource Laboratory at the Georgian Technical University. There were found Antibiotics: Terbinafine, Clarithromycin, Enalapril detected less than 4.00 ng/L, Ciprofloxacin 12757.1193 ng/L, Cetirizine 1913.5679ng/l, Citalopram 391.8258 ng/l, Enrofloxacin 191.3568 ng/L, Ofloxacin - 50.1173 ng/l, Trimethoprim – 4.0094 ng/l, Metoprolol – 3.6449 ng/l, water-soluble alkaloid Caffeine at 54.4407 ng/l, Nicotine – 12.5046 ng/l, painkillers and antipyretic medicine Paracetamol is present at low concentrations – 2.5964 ng/l. Since the standard design of the Telavi city treatment facilities does not provide special equipment for the treatment of wastewater from active pharmaceutical elements, it’ll be recommended to Telavi Municipality add one of the treatment equipment to the development project of this treatment facility.
